Wake up waiting thread when a return is received

Following Gary Russel's comment on the provided link, would it be possible at all to wake up the waiting thread when a return is received after publishing with the mandatory flag set to true so that, for instance, an exception could be thrown from the original call (so that, for example, a waiting request can be aborted before reaching timeout)?
