      The best way to do this is probably to use a regex, matching the "scheme" at the start of the URL, up to the "://" which is used for IP scheme-specific data (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1738.txt).

      "Scheme names consist of a sequence of characters. The lower case letters "a"-"z", digits, and the characters plus ("+"), period ("."), and hyphen ("") are allowed."
