Spring 3.0 allows the application context to be configured in Java code instead of (or alongside) XML files. Adding Roo support for this configuration style would not only give Roo users more choice about how their application is configured (obviously) but also give Roo more control and flexibility in how it generates and manages the Spring configuration, for example introduce the required methods and annotations via an ITD, with full awareness of what the user has configured themselves in the .java configuration file(s).

I think one of the great benefits of this feature can be comprehensive testing for the configuration. I actually don't know if roo currently generates tests for the xml configuration but from a "be able to stop using roo" standpoint this feature (along with generated tests) can be very awesome.
