The generated json-addon does not have the flexiblity.
I had tried the push-ins, but that seems to defeat the purpose.

I'd suggest that the CREATED (201) response code made by Roo is exactly correct. This is the relevant part of the spec: http://www.w3.org/Protocols/rfc2616/rfc2616-sec10.html#sec10.2.2
So I'd suggest that you approach the Kendo UI team, something I'd say is reinforced by your comment that that tool does not recognise other status codes even 500 (server error).
